What is the difference between a Septic Tank and a Sewage Treatment Plant?

Sewage treatment plants are more advanced than septic tanks and can treat wastewater to a higher quality. Any new build properties away from mains sewage are required to have a sewage treatment plant installed by law.

Sewage treatment plants use aerated technology or mechanical components to break down waste. Septic tanks use gravity to separate solids and liquids, but don't treat the liquid waste.

Effluent quality

Sewage treatment plants produce a higher quality effluent, which can be discharged into watercourses like rivers and streams. Septic tanks are considered polluting and can't discharge into watercourses.

Capacity

Packaged sewage treatment plants (STPs) can handle more wastewater and serve a larger population than septic tanks.

Maintenance

Septic tanks require less servicing than a treatment plant, but they need to be emptied more frequently.
